The Big Catch Fish ‘n Chips Logo

The food industry has been kind to me lately and even though eateries have been closing down or selling due to the economic situation, from where I’m standing it hasn’t really stopped people from buy these restaurants and setting up shop. I guess no matter what industry you are in everybody has to eat.

Being an Irishmen I have literally been raised eating fish suppers so when I was commissioned to design a logo for the Big Catch Fish ‘n Chips I took it as a medal of honour and coincidentally that was the direction I went with when designing the logo.

I wanted to incorporate one of those lifesaver rings that hang on the sides of boats so I started off with that but instead of making it look like the stereotypical kind of safety device I used the company’s blue to colour it. Next I surrounded the outside of the graphic with rope which represents boats, docks and all that marine stuff.

Because this is not you’re regular Fish and Chip shop I decided to put some nautical starts that also show that it is a 5 star restaurant to give it a bit of class and then of course the fish caught in the fisherman’s net.

Plain, simple and beautifully illustrated this logo says a lot by packing in a little story but lacks the complexities of a novel just like all logos should do.

Logos Old and New

Here are the last four logos I have created, I thought it would be better to post them all together instead of separating them into their own individual posts.

Sandstone

Sandstone Facilities Maintenance Inc

The idea behind the Sandstone Facilities Maintenance Inc logo was simplicity. The client is a real oldschool type who I have known for a very long time and the whole concept of having a logo was quite new so the plan was not to get too  fancy.

This next logo was for a band called Lower Back Tatti who now go by a different name. This logo was tough because I didn’t want it to come off either cheesy or cliché but lets face it the best idea anyone can relate to with a name like LBT is a tattoo on the top of some girls ass.

Well I went for the tribal look for obvious reasons (damn I am cliché) and if you really look at the graphic you can see two swans with cobra heads facing each other making the shape of a heart.

The third logo is for Coffee Blend, which I can’t really take the full credit for. The client had the idea and I just kind of sketched it out, cleaned it up and vectorized it.

After researching other coffee brands and logos we noticed that they were all so similar so we agreed to stay away from that type of style but in our research we just happen to see a cigar label and we instantly knew which new direction to go, you just never know where you will find inspiration do you?

The last logo here is for Big Ten Burgers. The client wanted a logo that did not need any explaining and it could not contain an image of a hamburger.

Now it makes my job much more difficult to create a design which doesn’t need any explaining when you are not allowed to use any imagery, so the next best thing is to use text only.

Big Ten

Big Ten

Instead of using an “i” in the word Big we used the number 1 and combined the “g” with the letter “o” to make it look almost like a zero. This logo contains three different font types serif, sans-serif and a hand written typeface.

Photo Repair and Restoration

Photo Repair and Restoration

Photo Repair and Restoration is a service I offer but it seems to be one of those services that never makes it into the portfolio so I am changing my ways and including a few before and after images to get a sense of what is possible.

The before images here are of a wedding some years ago which have discoloured and faded. The bride was never really too happy with some of the objects in her photos, things like some people, sewer gratings and telephone lines.

The husband wanted to surprise his wife on their 50th wedding anniversary giving her the photos she always wanted, isn’t that sweet? She was quite surprised and really enjoyed them and on top of it all their family can enjoy them for many more generations to come.

Imperial Oil is by far the largest company I have done work for up to this point in my career. It was a team effort between O Two Essential Creative Solutions & Digital Deceptions, they hired me to produce a CD Rom presentation and they created all the packaging and print collateral.

The client wanted a presentation that was clean professional and exciting; they were bored with the old PowerPoint jobs and needed something more so Flash was the only way to go.

The project was a great experience and confidence booster; I could play with the big boys. We finished on time and budget and the client was really happy, all in all it was another successful collaboration between Digital Deceptions and O Two ECS.

Hatch House Montessori

This is a logo I created for Hatch House Montessori School; they have such a unique building that it just had to be incorporated into their logo.

The reference photos were not the best to work with but I was more interested in getting the exact amount and placement of the buildings turrets as well as the accents around the windows to make it look real authentic.

In the end I think I think I really capture the look and feel of the building and the client was well pleased with the outcome.
